WP1
CHOICE OF TECHNOLOGY, REQUIREMENT PERFORMANCES AND SAFETY
To define application use cases and their requirements and technical specification of next generation technologies in cells and system components, namely gen 3 and gen 4 cells, for on road, waterborne, airborne, rail and offroad in terms of electrical performance, cycle and calendar life, cost, and safety; To screen, source, and test cells according to the specifications and sustainability criteria; To define module and pack requirements and technical specifications for different users cases; To define the BMS requirement and technical specifications for different user cases; To define the testing specifications for performances and safety demonstrations; To develop a roadmap for cell technologies specific for above applications.
WP2
SYSTEM DESIGN AND PROTOTYPING
To study and to analyse conceptual next-generation battery system architectures, considering use case requirements and anticipated technology; To develop innovations for next generation battery system designs and architectures; To apply virtual design tools for development of prototyped systems; To give input to manufacturing and battery management systems design.
WP3
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT: MODELS, TOOLS, ALGORITHMS
To lead the software development of the project in terms of the mathematical systems governing the battery models, high-performance numerical solvers and simulations, and optimization methods based on machine learning approaches and artificial intelligence techniques, as well as algorithms for the BMS. To evaluate a digital twin strategy, where the software package will be structured with connectors to data and system actuators towards an optimal battery passport, or digital representation for sustainable batteries.
WP4
ELECTRONICS AND HARDWARE FOR BMS
Development and implementation of the hardware elements for innovative battery management concepts from WP2. Based on the detailed designs developed in WP2, the required basic hardware elements for the project demonstrators will be realized in WP4. All demonstrators come in the form of 48V modules, which are based on different 3rd and 4th generation battery cells. Hardware components, also including spare parts, to produce two samples for each demonstrator will be done.
WP5
MANUFACTURING AND RECYCLING WITH LCA
To manufacture two battery packs for each prototype with given energy/power characteristics, and to implement specific BMS and safety modules at the battery system level; Reuse of the battery and packs for the second life cycle by dismantling for recycling of cells and BMS; To reduce the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing of battery systems provided by high recyclability of the different component of the BS system.
WP6
TESTING, VALIDATION, ROADMAP TO CERTIFICATION
Demonstrate Performances and Safety Features of prototypes for the different fields of applications; Conduct abuse testing (thermal runaway, mechanical abuse, electrical abuse, thermal abuse) of prototypes, at module level, to demonstrate the safety features designed in WP2 and WP4; Establish a roadmap toward certification of next-generation battery systems and contribute to the homogenization of standards; Provide Data for validation of virtual tools / numerical models.
WP7
COMMUNICATION, DISSEMINATION, IP&EXPLOITATION, NETWORKING WITH OTHER EU INITIATIVES + BUSINESS DEVLOPMENT
Communicate project results maximising the expected impacts; Facilitate active dissemination and stakeholder engagement; Identify and quantify the market opportunities for the project technologies, to support future uptake from TRL 3 to TRL 5; Develop an exploitation plan to protect the innovations generated and maximise the market reach and impact of the developed solutions.
WP8
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Monitor activities and ensure that the anticipated project outcomes will be in time and in-line with the expected results; Comply with the legal, contractual, financial, and reporting requirements of HE and EC; Organise and assist to coordination meetings; Adequately manage the partners funds.
